I am having diabetes since last seven years. I was controlling the sugar by taking glimaday 1 mg and metphormin 500. The average was fasting 120 and PP160. Sometimes the level of sugar used to go down to as low as around 60. I attended medical checkup at a hospital in goa for total check up at a cost of Rs 1000. During the consultation, the physician advised me not to take Glimaday as it destroys the liver. He prescribed me to take ten20 (one per day) metformin 500 (3 per day) and Invokana (1 per day ). I understand that Invokana tablet has serious side effects. So, kindly advise me whether, I should take invokana, one tablet per day. Or continue with glimaday tablet as advised by my previous Doctor. My Present normal sugar is within control Fasting 120 and PP 140. SOIRU DESAI.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. First thing is that Glimperide does not affect liver in any way. It is one of the most safe oral anti - diabetic drugs used. If you have been having good control with Glimiperide 1 mg, then best is to continue that. There is no reason to change to a newer drug, just because it is available. I would like you to continue earlier treatment, take care of your diet and exercise regularly that should help you in better control. Maintain fasting around 100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg and HbA1c% <6.8. That should be good enough. If you have any doubts please do come back. As regards the side effects of Invokana, with any drug the list of side effects is big enough. But all those do not occur in every patient. It is a good drug, but only when present treatment is not beneficial plus patient is over weight. For you there is no need. Thanks.
