I'm a 27 years old female, I have this Problem since my school days that I talk when I'm alone as if someone is listening to me and sometimes I had been caught talking out loudly to nobody. Is there any mental exercise to get rid of it.

lybrate-user, as children we used to say out loudly what we are thinking, and as we grow up, we internalise it. This internal dialogue is actually thinking, where we talk to ourselves as we mentally process things around us. Since you still feel the need to talk your thoughts out loudly, this also points out to the fact that you are not able to express yourself sufficiently in front on people, or haven't had good friend circle since school that you could share your feelings with. If your concern is the embarrassment of being caught talking would suggest you to start writing in a diary what all you want to talk to someone when alone. However I suggest you seek private consultation to dig deeper, and to be able to freely express your thoughts and feelings to people as well.

Talking to self ,though a symptom of mental illness by it self alone (not associated with other features) is not indicative of mental illness, some Introverts talk to themselves, better get an evaluation done by a Psychiatrist, try to be conscious of your problem and develop alternate methods to express your thoughts.
