I am 56 year old male suffering from depression for more than 30 years. I have been on antidepressants since then. Starting with tricyclic medicine-imipramine 150 mg, and settled with paroxetine 12. 5 mg and clonazepam 0.25 mg. (Zaptra 12.5 CR). I am taking this medicine since 17 years and having no problems. Now my question is will the medication cause any health issues in future. Any new antidepressants which has more efficacy to cure this disease.

Lybrate-user, Paroxetine is a newer antidepressant known as SSRI. The dose you are taking is also low. There are side effects to any medications and this is why it is important that the psychiatrist monitors you regularly for both symptoms of depression and side effects of medication. However medications are prescribed after taking the pros and cons into consideration and when the benefit of medications outweigh any risks they may have.
