After mensturation (which usually last for 5 days) next 3-4 days are considered safe period (when chances of pregnancy are less). So if thinking of starting family you should have intercourse 3-4 days after menses are over, however since Menstrual Cycle differ from women to women one should check with a Gynecologist for better explanation.
