My mother has been suffering from depression for more than 2 decades. The occurrence is not frequent but it does come back in year or two. Right now too she is showing similar symptoms. She does not sleep properly, has really bad appetite, remains isolated and does not communicate much. She suddenly breaks into laughter without any reason and then becomes sad all of a sudden. Talks about things that do not sound logical. However, she carries out all her duties responsibly from cooking to everything apart from forgetting a few things sometimes. Kindly suggest what I should do.

Dear Suparna, Your mother, Mukta has been suffering from either recurrent depression or bipolar depression. That is why the doctor has given Oleptol, as a mood stabilizer. Once a year or two recurrence is also too much suffering for herself and family. Please go back to the doctor with mood chart, if you have maintained. She/he may increase the dose of Oleptol to prevent next year's depression now itself. She/he may add an antidepressant now along with Oleptol.
