I am suffering from thyroid problem since 17 years, I had consulted an endocrinologist, he prescribed thyroxine 50 mg, then my thyroid became worse the doctor gave me methimez tablets, later, I developed grave disease, my doctor gave radioactive iodine therapy, since then I had put on excessive of weight and severe leg pain, and under eye bag, the physician close by my house said that I must repeat the radioactive iodine therapy once again, is this harmful?

Hello, Thanks for the query. I have gone through the details mentioned. It is difficult to understand why the treatment given took so many changes. Because no where you have mentioned actual tsh, t3 & t4 values. Because levothyroxine is given to treat hypothyroidism, usually when tsh is > 10 mu/l. Hyperthyroidism is exactly an opposite condition where tsh < 0.01 mu/l. Where there is very high t4 & t3 level. In that methimazole is given usually for 18 months to 2 years. Similarly if that treatment fails or if hyperthyroidism recurrs, then radio active iodine (rai) is used. So if now rai has to be used, then you will have do so. I can not really comment more as there is no clear history. Thanks.
