Dear Ravi, i am sure, no doctor has prescribed 3 gm/day alprazolam. Since you became dependent on it, you went on increasing the dose without doctor's advice. Withdrawal symptoms also are part of alprazolam dependence. Please get out of this dependence by M.E.T. motivational enhancement therapy and other long acting drugs or antidepressant. It may take about 12 weeks for you to tolerate the withdrawal. It is better for you to take treatment now itself. Once memory loss (dementia) sets in, it is difficult to reverse.

Mr. Lybrate-User, it's a highly possible side effect of alprazolam. I would recommend shifting to longer acting bzd and then stopping it completely. In this way, you won't face withdrawal symptoms.

Alprazolam is an extremely addictive and dangerous drug on long term. It reduces anxiety symptomatically for short term only. Ssri, snri or tca group of medications are prescribed after detailed evaluation by a psychiatrist for long term, safe treatment of anxiety. They act by normalising serotonin in the mind (brain) which is responsible for anxiety disorder. You have to do two things, approach a psychiatrist, get treated for your anxiety at the same time alprazolam dependence, which is gradually titrated, supplements given and then removed. All the best.
