My mother is 63 years old. She retired from a government service 3 years ago. Due to retirement and and certain issues at home she started to look sad and depressed. Few months ago she started to act very angry, irritated and forgetful. We consulted a psychiatrist and he diagnosed her illness with depression and prescribed 3 medicines. Amixide, lonazep and rexipra. She is taking amixide and rexipra currently from past 3 months but have stopped taking lonazep after 1 -2 months as advised by him. But the issue is that she does not remember some of the major recent events. Like 6 months or 1 years old happenings. She is also complaining of light headedness, dizziness. We conveyed this problems to the doctor but he is blaming everything to her age and told to continue with the same medicine. We got her blood tested for b12 which was above normal as she was taking b complex capsules. She is a diabetic patient and her bp is normally in the range of 150 and 65 kindly suggest something.

Respected friends, I am giving you the right way for treatment. That is not only the psychiatric issues. You are going in the wrong way. I think this is the case of Alzheimer's disease. But this diagnosis will confirm after the test. That is the very serious problem find out in old age. You go with that first then psychiatric treatment. Dear lybrate-user, it is nice to know your concern for your mother. Since she is a diabetic, she is more prone for depression and dementia. Since she is already on antidepressants (amixide and rexipra), let her continue. She should continue effective diabetic treatment also. If dementia has not set in her brain already, she will improve her memory also. In the meanwhile, your mom needs investigations for dementia. The investigations are a detailed neuro psychological assessment by a clinical or cognitive psychologist. There will be few in delhi. If dementia is found, she needs to undergo many blood tests, mri/pet brain scans to diagnose the type of dementia. Treatable dementias are hardly 1 in 10. Still it is worth investigating, if you can afford.
