I am a 21 year old female diagnosed with idiopathic intracranial hypertension about a week back. No papilledema was found. I am on topirol 50 since the last 4 days and scheduled for a spinal tap the coming week. I have been feeling extremely low and depressed ever since I have started the medicine and I am not sure if it is a side effect or am I suffering from depression as I have felt like this before too. Should I see a psychiatrist?

It's great to hear from you and your short story about how you have overcome the symptoms of idiopathic intracranial hypertension is amazing. It seems like you have done quite well after being diagnosed and treated for the condition. However, there is always a limit to the ability to be resilient to these situations and that is where the medications come in. I am glad that you are on topirol, however it is for your headaches and not for depression. I strongly recommend that you consult a psychiatrist, more so since you also mention that you are 21 year old, female with a co morbid history of diabetes. Look forward to hearing from you. Dear Lybrate-user, Yes, you need to see a psychiatrist. Depressions are recurrent and it is possible that you got another episode now when you are undergoing investigation for intracranial hypertension. Topirol 50 mg is a starting low dose. At the age of 21, I don't expect, feeling low and depressed, may be due to its side effect. However it might have been prescribed arbitrarily for your symptoms before getting a diagnosis. You can stop it, if it is so. Or you can discuss with your doctor tomorrow during spinal tap.
