Sir/madam, is rbs 161 indicates diabetes, and if so, needs medications? Can it be control without medicines? I am asking for my mother since her recent rbs increased to 161 mg/dl from the previous rbs 146 around. She is about 65 years of age, undergoing heart medications like amipace, lenoxine, exentia, metropol, etc. please advice.

Hello, Thanks for the query. It is difficult to make a diagnosis of diabetes based on only random blood glucose. It is necessary to check her fasting PP glucose levels and HbA1c% to confirm whether she has diabetes or not. Another important aspect is her being overweight with a BMI of 29.28 kgs/Sq meter(Normal < 23 kgs/Sq meter). She is almost in grade 1 obesity.She has more than14 kgs excess weight. This is an invitation for diabetes. If weight is controlled, diabetes can also be controlled very well. Thanks.

Hello, There are three different criteria with which diabetes is diagnosed. Random blood sugar criteria is a good method to diagnose diabetes. Your mother will need further tests before diabetes can be ruled out. She needs to be evaluated for diabetes immediately as she has multiple other health issues.

Random blood sugar up to 170 mg is normal. By definition if random blood sugar goes above 200 mg then only we declare diabetes.
