Hello, many many disorders have a specific pattern of symptoms or a constellation of symptoms occuring together. If they do, it is probably that disorder. If a test for a specific disease or disorder exists it can be done, but unfortunately, for many many illnesses in psychiatry, the science is not that advanced that any tests can be done. If the doctor has taken a detailed history and done a clinical examination ,he might have prescribed the medicine which is best suited according to the diagnosis. I'll give you a common example. If you go to a general physician with complaints of pain in the throat while swalloing, hoarse voice, either a cold/ fever. He will not do any tests. He will start a presumptive treatment for tonsillitis. This is almost the same.
