I am 33 years old. I am in depression since 4 years. I consulted a psychiatrist nearby and recommended tablets like venlift lonazep and nexito. Still I am continuing this tablet. Even then I am not able to get out of depression. I had ect treatments 4 times too. This is not my my first episode in depression. While I was studying in 9th I got this feel first time, but I didn't know the way to express my difficulties to my parents. They also never able to understand my illness. It last for nearly 15 to 20 days. And then I got into normal without treatment. Next this depression we episodes continued to be repeated in my life. 2nd episode while doing 11th std and it last for 1 month and left untreated, 3rd and 4th episodes while I was doing 2nd year and 4 th year irrespectively. These last for 3 months and 6 months respectively and back to normal. And again 4th episode while I am doing pg in 2011 and it last for nearly an year and back to normal again. But every time I am in depression it was severe, sleepless nights, over thinking, suicidal thoughts etc etc o suffered a lot and left untreated and the current episode started in the year 2015 with same symptoms when my son was one year old. I told to my wife, initially she also not able to understand, then we both went to psychiatrist. They prescribed medicines. Monthly once I used to visit my doctor. With same consulting doctor I am taking medicines for 4 years. Even then I am not able to come out of depression completely. Some symptoms of depressions r still there but not severe, recently in one medical check up, the report told that I have less semen count so they told this is the reason we are struggling to get the second baby. And they prescribed some tablets for one month related to that. After two my wife got conceived and we confirmed it and sad news is that when we went for periodic checkup at the stage of two months pregnancy in the scan the report impression was missed abortion. Shall I stop taking tablets of depression because I studied that these tablets causes sexual dysfunction side effects. What to do. Please give me suggestions how to come out of this long term depression and to lead a peaceful life. Pls. I am waiting for your valuable rey and keep my questions and your suggestions more confident please. Pls reply your suggestions to my mail email

Mr. lybrate-user, you seem to be having recurrent depressive episodes, the points that you hv stated show probably in the past your depressive episodes were not optimally treated maybe cause of sheer lack of information about depression and its treatment. But never the less you seem to be on a regular treatment course now since past 4 yrs. I have only brought out this point to let you know that many a times when patient are not treated for their depressive episodes or suboptimaly treated, then with subsequent episodes the severity of symptoms increase and thereby requires aggressive treatment to settle them, maybe for that reason you were given ects. As depression is a biological state wherein neurochemical changes occur, all these take time to settle, as for now you seem to be 80% settled and report having few symptoms left but you say they do not disturb you that much, hence you appear to be in a partial remission stage, at these stages you can opt for therapy sessions trust me they help, they improve your cognitive biases, remove cognitive errors help you see world with positivity. Please give it a try, along with continuation of medicines. Secondly please note medicines do hv a s/e of secual dysfunction but its not so easy to label any offending drug. I suggest you can discuss your prescription with your doctor. Besides loss of semen due to drugs is not a possibility, yes depression disorder as a whole can affect your mood and pleasure hormones so its all indirect not directly related.

If you have been on antidepressants for 4 years continuously and for the previous times you have had four different episodes it seems like you have depression with dysthymia. We call it double depression and it needs treatment on a long term basis. You also mention that you have had ect. However you do not mention how many treatments you received and what was their outcome. If you want to go off of antidepressants you might need to gradually taper them off, while being on a different kind of therapeutic measure like counseling. Look forward to hearing from you.
