Though weight gain is one of the side effects of piolitazone but the you may have other side effects also. He�ce I don't think it as a good idea. Concentrate on your diet and balance energy intake with its consumption. You can take help of a dietitian.

If you mean taking pioglitazone for your condition: pioglitazone is not meant for use in t1dm its only for t2dm patients. Your are suffering from absolute insulin deficiency so you need insulin replacemet therapy for rest of your life till new mode of therapy comes. Regarding weight loss: insulin itself causes weight gain. But if your are loosing weight you need to focuss on your diet coz with insulin too much calorie restriction is not required. So you should 1st meet your treating physician and discuss about your weight loss issue. He will certainly guide you regarding this matter.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Usually no oral anti-diabetic medication is used in treating T1 DM. However, Pioglitazone has been used occasionally and there seems to be some advantage in using it. It may help in stabilising the glucose levels better, without altering the weight or insulin requirement. Weight loss in diabetes occurs if blood glucose levels are not well controlled. When glucose level goes beyond 180 mg, kidney filters excess glucose in to urine, which is lost, thus there is a loss of energy, If glucose is persistently higher then more of it is lost, leading to weakness, excess thirst, more urination, excess eating and weight loss. Since there is no mention of fasting an PP glucose levels and HbA1c%, it is not possible to know whether diabetes is well controlled at all. Weight loss may be due to improper control. Thanks.
