Hi. The medicines used for epilepsy are for preventing recurrence of seizure attacks (fits) and not for curing the disease. There are many types of epilepsies. For some epilepsies, for example, benign rolandic epilepsy, that occurs in children, no treatment is required. Its self limiting and gets cured as the child crosses 12-14 years of age. Many other epilepsy types cannot be adequately controlled inspite of multiple anti epileptic drugs and are called drug resistant epilepsies. This happens in 20-25% of people with epilepsy. The vast majority of patients are in between these two extremes. If the seizures remain refractory, then epilepsy surgery i.e, a surgery in the brain to remove the focus which is responsible for the epilepsy like a scar or developmental abnormality or tumor can be done. Surgery generally cures the disease permanently if patient selection and surgical procedure is appropriate. In your case, you need to continue anti epileptic medicines. The duration of treatment depends on the cause of epilepsy which is determined by clinical history, an eeg and if need be, an mri scan of the brain. By and large, if seizures are well controlled and you remain seizure free for 2-5 years, an attempt to withdraw medicines can be made. Hope this addresses your concern.
