Hello Anand Escitalopram is an effective antidepressant which needs to be taken for atleast 6 months , possibly longer depending on the diagnosis and recovery. If you are feeling better then escitalopram can be gradually tapered down. It is a good idea to cut down to 5 mgs once daily. Continue for atleast another month on 5 mgs once daily. If you feel better, cut down down to 2.5 mgs once daily for another month and then stop. If you have relapse at any stage, go back to 10 mgs once daily. Counselling/therapy will help to prevent relapse Hope this helps

The situation under which this was prescribed needs to be reviewed with a view to determine if you could do without medicine in near future or you need some kind of support. May be lower dosage of this medication. May be another medicine. Of may be some lifestyle modification. So the right way is to consult your doctor who had prescribed this .or any other psychiatrist.

Dear lybrate-user, if you feel completely relieved of the symptoms for which you started taking escitalopram for a minimum of six months, it may be a good time to start a taper. Never try to taper antidepressants on your own, since the risk of relapse is always there. The time duration and dosing for taper will depend on how your body and mind take the reduction in dose. I would strongly suggest that you get in touch with a psychiatrist near you to help you out. Have a great day. All the best.

Generally, for tapering, you can take 5 mg for a month then stop it. But, it's better to ask your psychiatrist, because it's not known why there is a need for tapering.
