I was having anxiety I took anxit plus .5 for 7 years (2 tablets per day after meals) and my anxiety has come down. Now due to unavailability of anxitplus .5 I am taking anxit. 25 2 5able in morning ang 2 tablets at night. It is very very slow acting. Can I increase 1 tablet of anxit .25 at night.

Dear lybrate-user, anxit is alprazolam, a short acting benzodiazepine. It is not effective in the long run since it develops tolerance. So you feel like increasing the dose for the same effect. Finally you can neither stop it nor get the same benefit. At the age of 65 plus, any benzodiazepine will cause memory lapses and respiratory distress at increased dose. So, reduce alprazolam slowly and steadily even if it is slow acting, don't increase the dose. Rather miss a dose or take it later, if you need it. Anxit plus has another drug, sertraline 25 mg. Please take only sertraline - though it is also slow acting, it is useful in the long run.

Anxiety will initially increase but if you are able to handle it it will start decreasing once it reaches its peak. It is better if you are taking it. 25 if you do not increase the doze it is better because these drugs are habit forming and will give you withdrawal if you reduce abruptly. Medicine should be tapered in consultation with your doctor but if you can manage with low dose it is better.
