My aunt is 78 years old and has diabetes since more than 20 years. She is on medication tablet gluconorm g2 since then. Due to frequent urination at night and heavy drop in sugar in morning fasting (sometimes 75 to 80, she avoids taking the tablet in night and only takes before breakfast in morning (once a day). Since last few weeks, her blood sugar is post dinner is coming between 200 to 230 reading. However although no tablet in night, her morning fasting is 100 to 110 daily. Is post dinner reading cause of concern at her age and what can be done to take care of that without affecting frequent urination and morning heavy drop in levels, since fasting readings are always in order.

Hello, thanks for the query. I have seen the details given. The medication that she is taking - contains glimiperide 2 mg which has a fairly long duration of action and has a tendency to cause hypoglycemia in the elderly. So it is better to shift to drugs like gpp - iv inhibitors like sitagliptin, vildagliptin, linagliptin or tenelegliptin plus metformin. This combination is unlikely to cause hypoglycemia. However, blood glucose <70 mg is considered as hypoglycemia or low sugar). So if she is ready to shift to one of these drugs then consult your local physician and get necessary prescription and change the medication. Or if you are fine with online help, please come back with following details: fasting, pp glucose, hba1c%, serum creatinine, urea, bp reading and weight, height, extent of physical activity through the private conversation then I will be able to give specific prescription and necessary instructions. Thanks.
