The patient has been taking paroxetine 50 mg for last one year for anxiety issues. 3 months ago, he was also prescribed librium 10 at night for sleep assistance, and he took it for about 2 months and a half. Recently due to sleep issues, our doctor has stopped librium and asked to start ativan 1 mg at night. We took last consultation 2 weeks ago. Sleep issue is resolved, but after stopping librium patient has been feeling mild sadness, and increased anxiety even after taking ativan for two weeks. Our concern is, could this be the withdrawal effects of librium 10 mg. If yes, how to safely stop it since its a lowest dose. Thank you.

The changes patient nis experiencing are not withdrawal symptoms as they don't last for weeks but are symptoms of anxiety it self and they may be observed as compared to librium, ativan is short acting. Patient needs modifications in his/her dose regimen under guidance of psychiatrist and all symptoms can be managed easily.

Dear lybrate-user, for sleep and reduction of anxiety librium is a better tablet than ativan. Usually librium does not give much withdrawal since it is long acting. Ativan may cause dependence and may be withdrawal also, since it is short acting. Request your doctor to go back to librium.

Dear user, you are talking about a person who is 27 years old and according to you he has some anxiety issues. You are treating him with medicine, fir sometime you can go for medicines but he is too young to take the medicines in long term. Medicines are not good fir him, all these medicines have some side effects. If you want to control his anxiety and help him for his future then please make him aware and understand about counseling. Counseling is a better option for him. He needs some counseling sessions so that he would be able to help himself and get rid of anxiety, with counseling he would learn how to deal with his thoughts and keep himself relax. But I need a detail case history of patient, why he get so anxious, what is actual reason behind it so that I would be able to help him better and taper his medicines and finally stop and make him strong to fight with his thoughts. So connect with me on this no mobile and discuss all the things in detail. Thnx.

Not withdrawal, as both ativan and librium belong to the same group of drugs. Though you may need to review with your psychiatrist to fine-tune the drugs as per your current symptoms, including sadness. Could be an increase in your primary disorder or a new onset depression, these are not drug related. Sometimes librium help anxiety issues slightly better in the background of any alcohol/substance history. Don't worry, review. Best of luck.
