Today I visited to my local psychiatrist and he prescribed me clonazepam tablet for anxiety and panic disorder. I heard that it causes addiction. So is it safe for me to take it or not.

Your doctor will be on the lookout if there are signs of addiction apart from your own experience. But if you are keen on getting off of the medication in due course, I suggest you take up counselling with a professional. What you need to do is visit a counselor immediately and work out the emotional baggage that is bothering you to cause this anxiety and panic, especially fear. Fear is the key for resolving the anxiety, successfully. These attacks can become more frequent and more forceful. There could be a lot of guilt that needs to be worked out. Anxiety is curable if you cooperate. Forewarned you should be forearmed. If the counselor thinks that you need medication, so be it. In the meantime get your body fit: it plays a very important role in order to harbor a fit mind. So exercise regularly, go for yoga and meditation to train the brain, sleep well and eat healthily. Regarding the safety of taking the medication, obviously it is safe. Sometimes you will need to forget about the addiction aspects of the condition and go for the immediate and urgent resolution. Addiction can be easily monitored and prevented in time if there is timely intervention. Trust your doctor but also share your fears about this.

Dear lybrate-user, please weigh the benefit vs side effect. With clonazepam, addiction is a possibility. It depends on whether you increase the dose yourself, you continue the tablets after the doctor stopped prescribing, your whole thought process is how to stock clonazepam tablets, etc. If you have control over these issues, you can take it for few weeks.

Hi lybrate-user, addiction can be caused by any substance or medicines. It depends on the doctor and the patient to decrease the medicine on timely fashion before you get addicted. I will suggest you to meet your psychiatrist after the prescribed time and he himself will reduce the dose of medicines so don't worry about addiction and you can safely take this medicine.
