Hi, I have been diagnosed with a 7 mm gallstone. My gallbladder is distended with normal wall. I was prescribed to take sorbidiol 150 for 3 months. Would the medication be enough to dissolve the gallstone, and how long would that take to dissolve or do I need to go for a surgery. Please help.

After taking medicine for the prescribed period of 3 months, please take ultra sound test to know the response of the medicine in dissolving the stone.

Hi lybrate-user, please understand that once a stone is formed, that means the pathology has gone beyond the control of any medicines (whatever claims they may do). You will need surgery for sure at some point of time. Medicines like sorbidiol may be helpful when there is sludge formation only, sometimes medicines may be used to buy some time for surgery. But, honestly, get your surgery done as early as possible and no need to delay it unnecessarily with any hope with medicines. Thank you.

only gallstones made of cholesterol have a chance to get dissolved. However dissolution therapy is not popular due to its higher failure rates.I would advise u to get operated for a permanent solution

Yes it would help dissolv e the gall stones but sometimes can cause pancreatitis which is a far greater concern than the gall bladder itself. Today laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a simple procedure and would recommend getting a cholecystectomy done.

Hello very unlikely that it would dissolve your gall stone. It just helps in gall bladder sludge. Once a stone if formed, it's not just the stone but the diseased and dysfunctional gall bladder wall. So I would suggest a repeat usg and if the stone is thr (which is most likely) then consult a good laparoscopic surgeon and get your gall bladder removed. Do it before it causes a problem and any complication. Regards.
