The doctors that my uncle is seeing keep prescribing him medicines to treat anxiety disorders. However, he always only has one chief concern: abdominal pain. Why do they all write him medicines like depran, petril, clonazepam? He never complains about insomnia or lost appetite or depression. I am concerned if these medicines are having adverse effects on his health. He's been taking them from more than 6 years.

Dear lybrate-user, if he has been seeking help for his abdominal pain for many years, then I am assuming that he would have been examined and tested for any physical condition that can explain the pain. When there is no apparent physical cause, one possibility is somatoform pain disorder, when the patient experiences the symptoms but a medical explanation is lacking. Such patients benefit from antidepressants and more importantly psychotherapy that will help them decrease the effect of pain on their lives. The good news is that, the condition is not dangerous, the bad news is that the patient will nevertheless be quite disturbed by his symptoms.
