What is binswanger's disease? Somebody I know is having it. Been told that it is not alzheimer. So then what is it? Person looks like having dementia like symptoms. We are at loss. Should we also consult a psychiatrist here?

Binswangers disease is also called subcortical arteriosclerotic encephalopathy. WhereasAlzheimers disease is a cortical dementia binswangers disease is a subcortical dementia. Brain has outer grey matter and inner white matter. Binswangers affects white matter. It is of vascular origin. Infarcts of blood vessels supplying white matter produces this disease. Language and calculation are affected later than in Alzheimers. Proper treatment of hypertension and diabetes prevents this disease. One should have proper exercise.
