Dear doctors; our baby is 10 days old. And he had a skin jaundice on 4th day after birth (bilirubin was 14.6 ); and hence treated for one day and again measured which showed the bilirubin level as 10.2. And released eventually. Now I want to know the symptoms of skin jaundice as we take the precautions, and one thing. For the first 7 days his stool was blackish, but now it is yellow. Is it any way related to high bilirubin level. But his urine is crystal clear, please advice.

Its neonatal jaundice. Its a common condition. Jaundice (s. Bilirubin) usually starts rising on 48-72 hrs of life and keep rising for about 7-10 days and then gradually decrease on around 12-15 days of life. Its because of destruction of mothers blood in baby which leads to this. If the level of bilirubin is higher than that of normal for that age, you have to treat it with phototherapy. First few days baby pass darked colour or black stool then gradually changes to yellow its normal. Its not due to jaundice.

It is physiological jaundice. It disappeared by 10 to 12 days of age. Stool colour change is normal not related to jaundice. If baby is passing urine 6 to 7 times in a day n started or may start to gain weight in 2 to 3 days by about 30 gm in a day, need not to worry.
