Most of children with childhood asthma are free of symptoms by the age of 12 years. But in few, who have a strong family history of allergic disorder or in whom symptoms are progressive in successive years, do progress to adult asthma. In this class of patients long term steroid therapy is must to prevent damage (remodeling) of bronchioles and lung tissue. Steroids can not be given orally for more than 10-15 days, if needed they have to be stopped gradually by tapering the doses. Inhaled steroids are safe for long term use for many years but of course under medical supervision.
