My mom's age is 49 and her prolactin levels are high since 4 months .she consulted gynecologist she gave her medicines .early ranges were 70 now its 40. Doctors recommended her for doing mri of brain. She is on antipsychotic and having hypothyroidism since 12 years. So doctor if range is 40 surgery is must? It cannot be conservatively managed. She is not yet diagnosed with pituitary tumor.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Since she has hypothyroidism, it is necessary to know her TSH level before any comment can be made. Because hypothyroidism also leads to increased secretion of prolactin. So please get the TSH levels if TSH is high, then first get it corrected to < 3 mU/L, that will also reduce prolactin. Secondly if the level remains high, then it is better to get a MRI done to see if there is any adenoma (prolactinoma either microor macro). Normal level range in non pregnant women is 5 to 40 ng/ml. Thanks.
