My Mom has got an ulcer kind of thing on the right side of the tongue which she misunderstood with the common mouth ulcer which normally heals with B complex supplements. It did not heal even after a month, can it be serious/ cancerous? She never consumes alcohol and tobacco. Please help. I can upload the pics if needed for diagnosis.

Dear Lybrate user, a non-healing ulcer demands urgent attention. You have not mentioned her medical history. Diabetics often face such problems, it may be a side effect of a regular medicine that she is taking. She may get her blood sugar checked. At times, a sharp tooth surface may cause ulcer by repeatedly hitting the area (tongue bite). You should consult your local dentist for a thorough clinical checkup rather than delaying it and posting the pictures here on Lybrate. In the meanwhile, advise her to consume lots of fluids and water to keep herself hydrated. Completely avoid very hot, spicy and fried food. Consume more fruits and juices. Maintain good oral hygiene by rinsing mouth after every meal and brushing twice daily. Take care not to hit the ulcer on the tongue repeatedly while brushing or chewing.

A mouth ulcer is an ulcer that occurs on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity.[1] Mouth ulcers are very common, occurring in association with many diseases and by many different mechanisms, but usually there is no serious underlying cause. The two most common causes of oral ulceration are local trauma (e.g. rubbing from a sharp edge on a broken filling) and aphthous stomatitis ("canker sores"), a condition characterized by recurrent formation of oral ulcers for largely unknown reasons. Mouth ulcers often cause pain and discomfort, and may alter the person's choice of food while healing occurs (e.g. avoiding acidic or spicy foods and beverages). They may form individually or multiple ulcers may appear at the same time (a "crop" of ulcers). Once formed, the ulcer may be maintained by inflammation and/or secondary infection. Rarely, a mouth ulcer that does not heal may be a sign of oral cancer. But please don't panic. Consult a doctor immediately. Take care.
