Dr. I am taking Ciplar la 40 for last one and half months for high BP and palpitation episodes. After a month I stopped taking it in between for two weeks as I felt alright, but two weeks after discontinuing my BP was 150/94, so started taking it again. Will I have to take it for a long period? I am feeling a slight tremor in my hands. Does it have any withdrawal symptoms? How can I withdraw this medicine effectively? I am a teetotaler, With some lifestyle changes and yoga practice can I completely stop taking medicine?

Please understand that BP is chronic problem which is influenced by multiple factors like diet, lifestyle, stress, age, disease conditions. There are some factors which are modifiable and their modification can help reduce BP but then there other factors which cannot be addressed and require medical treatment. So it is difficult to say whether you will be able to not need any medication at all despite precautions, but can definitely try, and if it works this is the best way out, but in case these changes do not completely bring BP in the required range then you will need low dose anti-hypertensive. Begin with lifestyle precautions - daily 45 mins of exercise like brisk walking or jogging or swimming etc, work on your stress and anxiety management, avoid high salty foods like chips, namkeens, achaar, papad, sauces, chutney, processed food and fast food, take a detailed diet consult for a DASH diet with a dietitian, avoid smoking, if despite 6-8 weeks of these precautions your BP remains high then consult your cardiologist for medications.
