Dr. my son is suffering from depression anxiety & anger bouts. We r already showing him to a psychiatrist who has prescribed some medicines. This has been going on for the past 3/4 months now, he is ok at times & sometimes in a very bad state (to the extent of being abusive at times with my husband & me). I want to understand how long it can take for him to come out of this state?& also do these medicines have long term side effects if taken for long?

Hi, I suggest you also see a psychologist for your son to help him with any underlying concerns or stressors that may be making him feel anxious, sad or angry. Usually when we are unable to deal effectively with some challenge, whether internal or external, it leads to distress and dysfunction. While medicines help to address our moods by regulating the chemicals in our brains, a psychologist can help to bring about long term change in coping skills. Hope this helps. Best Regards, Meeta.
