Hi lybrate-user, in majority cases it's mandatory to remove gall bladder (GB) It depends on many factors, like size and number of gall stones, whether those or symptomatic stones or not. If stones are symptomatic then it's not advisable to wait for gall stones to melt by tablets. Even if there is a first or single episode of colicky pain more in upper abdomen may or may not be associated with nausea vomiting its called symptomatic stone. And symptomatic gall stones should be treated with surgery, that's cholecystectomy (Removal of GB along with stones). If stones are asymptomatic, means found incidentally during sonography or CT scan for other reason, then depending on size one can try medication, if there is a large solitary stone more than 2 cm, or multiple tiny stones of few mm size then better to go for surgery. Medium size means 6 to 8 mm asymptomatic stone may b treated with medication like Ursodeoxycholic acid (udiliv, actibile n so many) but frequently needs to check size of stone on USG. This medicine helps to reduce cholesterol in your bile that helps in melting those stones But it depends on type and consistency of stone whether this medication will act or not.
