I have been suffering from Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy since 3 years and am continuously on medication. Recently my doctor advised me to switch from Levipil to Valparin slowly (decreasing Levipil and introducing Valparin). Is it OK to switch to Valparin as my seizures were mostly under control since last 1 year (except 2 cases where I got fits in-spite of taking medicines regularly) through Levipil. Thanks for your advice.

Dear friend, As per our protocol, our target is to make you completely seizure free on anti epileptic drug for 3 years at least, before we can withdraw and finally stop your anti epileptic drug. Since you had seizure while on Levipil, your doctor may be probably trying with a different drug with different mechanism of action. Switching to another drug is also done if candidate is not tolerating the drug properly or having interaction with another essential medication he is taking. The other standard practice/recommendation: increase the dose of the 1st anti epileptic drug till its maximum tolerated dose or add a second drug to the first one. Your doctor is the best judge in this regard. So discuss with him in detail and maintain good lifestyle by avoiding precipitating factors for seizures which you already know. Wish you all the best!
