Spina bifida occulta is a malformation of one or more vertebrae (bones of the spine). It is sometimes called ?closed? spina bifida. In most cases, spina bifida occulta causes no problems. The general term spina bifida describes several conditions that all arise from a defect in an embryo's developing spine. There are four types of spina bifida: occulta, closed neural tube defects, meningocele, and myelomeningocele. Occulta is the mildest and most common form. With occulta one or more vertebrae (bones that make up the spine) are not properly formed. ... Closed neural tube defects are the second type of spina bifida. Spinal dermal sinus tracts are abnormal connections between skin and spinal cord that cause cord tethering. They are considered as part of the spectrum of spina bifida occulta. Despite the frequent presence of cutaneous stigmata, these lesions are often diagnosed late or not at all. In some circumstances, the diagnosis is made after repeated bouts of meningitis.
