My mother is taking Eltroxin 100 for Thyroid from almost a decade. No issues from it. It's been 2 months she has been continuously taking it post it's expiry date unknowingly that the medicine has crossed it's expired date. Date of expiry was Sept 2018. Now it's Dec 2018. Just want to know, are there any adverse effects from taking this medicine post its expiry date. Although no noticeable effect seen till now, just because I am worried as she is experiencing a bit cough (may be due to the reduced effect of medicine). Kindly advise.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Madam expiry date is given because it is a statutory requirement. It does not mean that the medicine becomes dangerous after that date. In case of certain chemical entities like pain killers, or many other drugs post expiry nothing changes. Where as with some vitamins, antibiotics and certain other unstable drugs efficacy may reduce marginally. But no untoward effects happen. Thyroxine a synthetic hormone, nothing is likely to happen on taking it. Only there may be a reduction is efficacy. Thanks.
