On feb 6 when I took a test for first time my fasting blood sugar is 166 and ppb is 251. Doctor referred me for metformin 500. Than after 3 days my fbs is 107 and hba1c is 8.69.i took metformin for 6 days and concentrated on exercise and diet. On 20th feb my fbs is 98 and ppb hovers around 115 to 120. Today my fbs is 92. So should I take medicine. Or not. whether I am prediabetes or diabetic. I have taken medicine for only 8 days. But for last 14 days I had quit it. And I took daily reading in lab. The fbs is 92 now and ppb 110 to120.

Mr. lybrate-user, thanks for the query. The fasting, pp glucose values & hba1c%, mentioned show you did have diabetes. However, since starting of metformin the glucose levels have gone down quite well. Plus after 14 days of not taking any metformin, if glucose levels have remaind in excellent control, then you may please discontinue the medication. But please check your hba1c% after 3 months, plus keep checking fasting and pp glucose periodically, to see how the progress is. Thanks.

Dear lybrate-user an a1c of 8.69 confirms that you are diabetic. Please continue to take metformin until you get a low sugar. Continue it for a month and repeat fbs, ppbs and hba1c then. Symptoms of giddiness, decreased vision, profuse sweating, shivering of hands and severe hunger indicate low sugar.
