I am a 23 year old female. I usually experience a heaviness and pain in my left breast 10 days before my periods. However, this time there was a solid lump and a dull pain from my breasts to my arms. As soon as my periods got over, the lump has nearly vanished, but the pain is slightly there. I also have had off-whitish nipple discharge for three years, but that started as I consumed metformin. The doctor suggested that I have a benign fibrocystic breast lump. Please give your opinion!

Hi lybrate-user. This is one of the most common condition that breast surgeons or oncologists come across in their clinics and unfortunately there is no accurate solution to that but let me assure you as an oncologist not to worry at all. Most ladies in reproductive age group face some or the other issue related to menstrual cycle. This too is one of such kinds. This is all related to hormones. As your age increases your problem will slowly come down. Stop worrying about it and start living. You need to support your breasts by using accurate size brassiere and use pain killers if the pain is unbearable and affecting your daily routine. Rest of the treatment like evening primrose oil tablets and antioxidants can well be taken but without much long term benefits. Hope I was able to answer your query. Thank you.

It is a typical case of andi (fibroadenosis, need not worry just take some mild analgesics when needed but it is recommended to get yourself examined by a surgeon and ultrasound of breast if he/she think it's needed.

There can be hormone related changes in breast and sometimes lump too as you said it disappears after the period is over. Still regular discharge and lump needs evaluation and do a mamogram of both breasts and send me the reports.
