It depends on the individuals perception of emotional problems and needs. Few parents feel depression is something which is brought in by personal weakness or the individual?s inability to cope with normal stressors of life. They consider depression has to be overcome by self, and not with external help. These kind of people usually do not seek, and do not allow their loved ones to seek treatment, and many a times negatively view those taking treatment for depression, as unwarranted. Many of these people do not have science (biology, physics, chemistry) in their degree courses, so they may not understand the basis of depression and rely on their parents, internet, and self schema to come to conclusion about an illness (think about steve jobs, not taking proper treatment for his pancreatic cancer for nearly 1 year, allowing it to metastasise and leading to his own beliefs being the cause for his death). When people view medical illnesses like these, no wonder psychiatric illness like depression is not viewed correctly by a significant number of persons. Actually depression is caused by bio-psycho-social reasons. A person can be genetically prone for depression, the sociological factors and psychological development, all 3 of these contributing at various levels to manifest as depression. The affected individual ideally needs to consult a psychiatrist and get the medical reasons ruled out (like hypothyroidism, medication induced, alcohol or substance,?.etc) and the depression severity is quantified by standard rating scales (for example hamilton depression rating scale) and based on that treatment strategy is planned. For mild depression, either cognitive behavioural therapy or antidepressants or a combination is preferred based on the patient?s choice. For moderate depression it is better to start antidepressants and cbt together and follow up, for severe depression antidepressants are the treatments of choice and after significant reduction in depression scores, cbt or other talk therapies can be given. I hope this information helps you.
