Hi I am diabetic and having glycomet gp2 tablet twice a day, I am planning to have baby is it safe when am having this tablet.

Hello, thanks for the query. For a lady with preexisting diabetes, pregnancy does produce a lot of challenges. 1) there is a need for achieving a strict blood glucose control with glucose remaining between 90 to 120 mg through out the day. 2) just before conception there is a need to shift to insulin, because apart from metformin most other oral anti-diabetics are not preferred in pregnancy. 3) there is a need to check retina more often just before pregnancy and during the gestation. Because pregnancy increases the risk of retinal complications. 4) strict glucose control is absolutely essential to prevent complications in fetus, macrosomia (large baby >3.5 kgs) and complications during delivery. So there is a need to take proper opinion from your ob & gyn doctor, diabetologist and physician. Thanks.

Yes it safe to plan pregnancy but better to switch over to insulin when get pregnant.
