Hi, I am a 16 year old female who has been experiencing issues with sense of smell for the past year. For some reason, I have been smelling an extremely unpleasant and acrid burning smell which seems to be coming from absolutely nowhere. I made sure to check around my house to see if I could find a possible source of the smell, but found nothing. It is unlike anything i've ever smelt before - it kind of smells similar to a gas leak or cigarette smoke. At first, I was concerned that it might be the early symptoms of a stroke or epilepsy however, I ruled that out after not experiencing any further symptoms of the following illnesses, not to mention that, I do not have any past experiences of these disorders nor any relatives who I could have inherited it from. I did some research online, and found a smelling disorder which seems to very similarly describe what i'm experiencing - known as phantosmia. I have considered going to my gp, but I am afraid I will not be taken seriously because i?ve been told smelling disorders are such a complicated thing to diagnose, and a lot of doctors tend to write it off as a psychiatric problem instead of offering any medical assistance, since there are?t any visible signs as to what it could be. I?m unsure of what to do, which is why I decided to ask a professional online to see if there could be something done about this ? it is really impacting my life, as it makes me unable to enjoy meals or taste anything, is generally uncomfortable to experience, and is even impacting on some of my personal relationships as a lot of family members do not believe that what i?m experiencing is real. Is there any way for this to be treated? Or, will I have to deal with this for the rest of my life? Will I end up losing my sense of smell if I don't do anything about this?
