My mother 55 years old. Having a problem depression last 3 years. Etizolam & propranolol hcl tab to be given. Took medication 6-8 months but no effect found than discontinue. She is still in depression. What to do please tell.

Kindly get her alternative treatment. Medication shall only relieve the physical symptoms. Depression happens due to deep rooted sad events, relationship, feeling of not have achieved things desired. Loss of a loved one. To come out your mother requires purpose in life, work on the things she used to be interested in. Painting, music. Teaching. You can get her involved in local activities or ngos. Teach poor kids, include physical group activities like laughter yoga or ladies club. Simultaneously do get her therapy from a good psychologist to motivate her talk with her to understand her root cause of depression. I am sure she will be back to being normal again. Keep the faith.

Dear Lybrate user, Probably the doctor has not diagnosed Darshana with depressive disorder. She/he has treated only the anxiety part with etizolam and propranolol. Please consult the doctor again with present findings so that an antidepressant will be given, if Darshana is suffering from depression. Usually anxiety drugs are given for immediate relief and withdrawn in 3-4 weeks. Antidepressants will be given for longer time.

Propranolol causes depression and etizolam is just helping in reducing the anxiety. If your mother is really suffering from depression she needs a psychiatrist. The current medicine was most probably prescribed by a general physician.
