I was on the medication for ocd since last 1 and a half years under proper medical guidance of a trained and experienced psychiatrist the main medicine was fluvoxin cr 100 mg and other kept changing according to my response to the doctor on my several visits. I was improving very well and my course was about to end. But suddenly due to educational purposes, I had to come to the other state for my further studies as a graduate. Before coming here we consulted him for the last time and he reduced the dosage by some amount. But I suddenly stopped taking the medicine after coming here. I even talked to him on the phone when I came here and he said as far as I am not feeling any other issues theres no issue in stopping the medicine. But I think I may be facing some problems now. Now, I want to know what can be done.

Dear lybrate-user, you had treatment for 1 1/2 years. At this young age of 18 years, you are capable of identifying your obsessive thoughts at the earliest. Since your prefrontal cortex would have fully developed by now, you can even tolerate the anxiety associated with the obsessive thoughts without going into any compulsions (rituals). So without medicines, you can progress in your studies and in life. Since you were only on low dose of 100 mg of fluvoxamine, suddenly stopping it, is okay. You may not face any withdrawal symptoms. Hope for the best. If any thought makes you to get into any peculier rituals, please contact the doctor again over phone or e-mails or even visit him on your vacation,

Dear Lybrate User, cognitive behavioral therapy (cbt), a type of psychotherapy, is effective for many people with ocd. Take online consultation or visit at my clinic as you need therapy along with medications. Exposure and response prevention (erp), a type of cbt therapy, involves gradually exposing you to a feared object or obsession, such as dirt, and having you learn healthy ways to cope with your anxiety. Erp takes effort and practice, but you may enjoy a better quality of life once you learn to manage your obsessions and compulsions.
