My father (age 64) has type 2 diabetes. He is taking human mixtard 70/30 insulin. His weight is 62 kg. What should be the best time, amount and frequency to take insulin to maximum effect and avoid hypoglycemia.

Usually it can be taken twice at morning and night time. As it has one insulin thats short acting and other is intermediate acting. So it give a good control over 6-8 hours. However, if he is experiencing hypoglycemia, the dose has to be adjusted. So kindly meet his treating physician or you can consult online.

Insulin to be taken 15-20 mins before food. Hypoglycemia never comes alone with insulin. It's the food. Always try to eat at the same time if possible to avoid hypo or hyper.
