See a dentist, do basic scaling, and get a consultation for a periodontal treatment such as grafting or flap surgery. No need to worry, they aren't very extensive.

There are many reasons for the gums receding. As I see your age which gives me an idea that you are two young it can be aggressive periodontitis or could be due to trauma from your occlusion. To see if it is from trauma of occlusion the bone loss will be restricted to just your lower teeth and a simple test that you can do to check is place your index finger in the gum region of your upper front teeth and bite on your teeth if you can palate vibration of your bite on gum region of your upper front teeth you need to consult both orthodontist and periodontics. If your gum receding is generalized i.e most of you lower teeth you need to visit your periodontist as early as possible. And the surgery can be divided into two steps wherein the first upper arch as a whole can be done then followed by lower or can be divided into four parts where upper arch can be treated in two visits right and left and lower arch can be divided in another two visits. Time taken can be based on the skills of the doctors it varies.

Go with basic scaling and curettage. go for xray to check bone loss. then if needed go for bone graft n flap surgery.. surgery is easy going,n not aggressive so need not worry on that account..
