Mr. lybrate-user, thanks for the query. When one is on treatment with adequate dose of levothyroxine, tsh is maintained around 3 to 4 mu/l, at which all the symptoms are in check. Tsh should be checked after a minimum of 6 weeks of starting the treatment. There is no point in checking at a gap of 15 or 20 days. It takes over 4 weeks for tsh level to change after taking a specific dose of levothyroxine. Checking repeatedly does not give correct picture. Another important aspect to be remembered is that hypothyroidism is a hormone (thyroxine) deficiency disorder. Since your gland is not producing enough or almost nil, there is a need for supplementing that hormone every day for lifetime. If one stops the treatment then all the symptoms reappear and tsh level will also go up. I hope you understand. If you have any questions please come back. Thanks.
