Hello, thanks for the query. Usually disulfuram is given as adjunct to psychotherapy. That is once patient agrees to stay away from alcohol after proper counselling. The drugs is started after a person abstains from alcohol for about 2 weeks. Initially 250 mg once or twice a day. Then maintained on the same dose for many days, weeks or even months. If person takes alcohol while on this drugs then there is a reaction to to alcohol leading to vomiting it out. Best way to make the treatment effective is get the person's involvement and commitment to stop alcohol consumption. So if possible please consider meeting a psychoanalyst or psychiatrist with the concurrence of your husband. That is the best option. The drug can be taken for a long time. Thanks.
