I'm reading a previous post of a patient complaining of a hard lump on the butt cheek after a fall on wood stairs. This same thing happened to me several years ago. I fell, hard, and hit the edge of a stair right on my butt cheek. It was a searing pain and I actually thought I broke my hip at first. After 30 minutes, I was able to get up but I had severe pain, a black bruise on my entire butt cheek for about a month, couldn't sit on that side for several weeks, and a huge lump formed across my whole cheek. It's larger than my hand. It's been several years and has not dissipated. It is as large as it was in the beginning and is still bothersome. I have a lot of pain in my sciatic area, hip, and the lump itself gets tender after prolonged sitting or pressure to the area. My Dr. Said at the time that it was one of 2 things, one would go away, one would be there forever. Can't remember what they were and i'm assuming I have the lifelong injury but my question is. What is this injury called and is there anything that can be done do reduce the lump or level of discomfort and pain?

Swelling is a normal reaction of the body to an injury. Sometimes the body goes overboard and the swelling response is excessive. Swelling is the result of the increased movement of fluid and white blood cells into the injured area for protection. The process of inflammation is designed to be helpful to the body in repairing injury. It should be an acute (or very fast) response whereby the immune cells quickly remove damaged tissue and destroy any invading micro-organisms. Immediate application of ice pack will be helpful in soothing the injured portion and reducing inflammation very fast. As your bump is very old, it got consolidated.
