Hello. Normally, medicines for depression take about 2-3 weeks to start taking effect, full effect in seen in a month. The benzodiazepine (clonazepam) is tapered off after a month and plain rexipra (escitalopram) is given for 3-6 months and then tapered off. This is the full course of medicines for depression when the patient responds to 1 anti depressant. If depression is severe, there might be a need to add another adjuvant such as a low dose atypical antipsychotic or a low dose mood stabilizer.

Dear lybrate-user, it depends on the diagnosis of type of depression. Like major depressive disorder, may take 3 weeks to improve, 3-6 months to continue the tablets. Dysthymia may be for long term. It also depends on the episodes. Frist episode 3-6 months, second episode 6-9 months and so on. It depends on dose also. Doctors start with low dose. After 2-3 weeks increase, if partial improvement. Please consult your doctor every 2-3 weeks till stopping the tablet (it will be many months after improvement). You can sms/call the doctor to get further prescription to avoid covid19.
