Hello, my mother who is 59 underwent lumbar decompression surgery two year ago. Now she is suffering from too much heat and itching in both palms of feet. Currently her diabetic levels are fasting-110 and pp- 180. Her medications include bmd tablet and insulate np tablet. She also take amlovas 5 mg and dilzem 60 mg for bp management. She usually feels burning sensation and itching at night while at the same time her bp remains in normal range. Please advice what should I do?

Hi, burning sensation is an abnormal neural sensation, can be explained in a diabetic with h/o laminar decompression surgery. For which your doctor has already given you insulate np tablet. If you persist to get more burning sensation, we have add additional neuropathic drug which will be difficult to do it in teleconsultation. I suggest you should physically see a neurologist or a near by physician and get dose adjustments.

Dear, you have mentioned sugar levels here, that may seem good in control on time of checking. Please get hba1c done. And you haven't mention since how long she is diabetic. It may progressive peripheral neuropathy which is a complication of diabetes. Please get neuropathy screening done for your mother to rule out the condition. Take care.

Burning sensations in the extremities, increasing at night ,in a diabetic patient can always be due to diabetic neuropathy & should not be neglected, particularly if the patient is diabetic for a long duration. It will always be advisable to perform a hba1c estimation as a fbs, ppbs may not always exactly depict the glycaemic status. Should always get a neuropathy screen done. Adhere to dietary recommendations. It is a treatable condition for sure. Don't worry.
