I am 32 years old amd recently got married and have been taking fluvator and flunil for my ocd since 2 years. Its almost the end of my dose and my psychiatrist has just reduced my medication to half the dose since may 2020 and advice me to continue it till june 22. I noticed that my period skipped so I took a pregnancy test and found out that I am pregnant. Will the medication I have been taking harm the baby? I did not take precaution of by taking folic acid supplement earlier. As I am already 32+ will not it cause any defect to the baby. Please help me clear my doubt.

In my opinion you need psychological counseling and psychological autosuggestion therapy through the online or offline process for three weeks without any medication for the permanent solution of your psychological ocd problem you can contact me for this on Lybrate website thank you.

Dear lybrate-user, you are old and responsible enough to have a planned pregnancy. You could have waited for few more weeks. However you have already become pregnant with tablets that may or may not cause harm to your baby. Start taking folic acid and wait for u/s pelvis for anomaly scan and few blood tests at 11th week, to check the baby. You may be lucky to have a normal child - please continue the pregnancy. If there is a defect, find out the details of it and discuss with your husband about continuing it.

Hello first of all congratulations on your pregnancy. L think you should discuss with your psychiatrist about your pregnancy so he/she will know about your situation and prescribe the medicine accorrdingly. At the same way you should discuss about your psychiatric problem with your gynecologist too. It will be helpful for you as well as baby too. Take care.

In every pregnancy (irrespective of you being on any medications) there is almost 3% risk of baby having malformation. As for fluvoxamine (fluvator) and flunil (fluoxetine, not much research is carried out on its effects on baby during pregnancy so it’s difficult to say if it will harm. However fluoxetine is considered one of the safer drugs. If possible contact your doctor and see if these medications can be stopped or atleast dose reduced to minimum during the course of your pregnancy. There is some risk of baby having withdrawal symptoms at birth if these are continued through 3rd semester. This is what research says. Discuss with your doctor, weigh the risk vs benefit, only then decide a treatment plan. Donot stop medications abruptly as it might worsen your ocd. Eat healthy. Continue taking folic acid supplements. Please tell about your medications to your gynaecologist too.
