My mother is 81 years old and has sugar problems. She was prescribed tossex syrup long back but she continues to take it even now. I would like to know if its harmful if it is taken continuously for so long.

Dear lybrate-user, check the small print on tossex and see if it contains codeine and chlorpheniramine maleate. If it contains codeine, and if your mother is sued to taking it for many years she may be addicted to the codeine component and it will be difficult to stop it. Codeine is a narcotic drug and can cause chronic constipation there is something called tossex new which does not seem to contain codeine you can try changing over to that
