Greeting. My father had undergone hydatid liver surgery in 2015. Post surgery he recovered well. One year after surgery he developed anxiety, stress, restlessness so doctor advised peace tablet (chlordiazepoxide and trifluoperazine. Now he wants to stop this medication. Is it safe to stop peace tablet medication suddenly? Or there will be withdrawal symptoms? Please reply.

There will be few withdrawal symptoms, especially due to chlordiazepoxide as he is taking it for a prolonged period of time. The best way is to decrease it to half for next 2 weeks and then stop. But stay ready to face some sleep disturbance for atleast next few days after stopping the half tablet too.

Dear lybrate-user, it is not advisable to stop the tablet abruptly without tapering off the dosage. It should be done only under the supervision of the doctor who prescribed it. Relaxation training or yoga therapy (with a qualified counselling psychologist/ experienced yoga teacher/) will help reduce your father's anxiety and also to taper the dosage.
