Dear Mr. lybrate-user, the reason your friend has lost sense of smell or taste is because the virus generally affects the nervous system and this is true of many viral infections including the common cold. Some patients can completely lose their sense of smell and taste even after one episode of a common cold. That being said, claribid is an antibiotic and not an antiviral; however we use it due to its immunomodulation properties and ability to affect protein synthesis. (complex reasons!). Over time generally the nerve tissue recovers and the patients tend to get back their sense of smell. So in my opinion, no medication in the short term will alter that. If your friend's doctor has recommended the claribid for other reasons, then they should take it but otherwise, no.
